On Rua Garrett, A Brasileira is perhaps the most famous stop. Opened in 1905, the café became a meeting place for writers and artists, including Pessoa, and his bronze statue now sits permanently outside its terrace.
Just a few steps away, Livraria Bertrand has welcomed readers since 1732 and is recognised as the oldest bookshop in the world still in operation. Its rooms and shelves offer another link to Lisbon’s long literary tradition and make it an easy place to linger while exploring the neighbourhood.Pessoa’s Lisbon extends well beyond Chiado. Here, Casa Fernando Pessoa occupies the building where the writer lived for the final 15 years of his life.
