Why Early Fall Is the Best Time to Visit

Corsica in high summer is undeniably beautiful. It is also busy. By September, however, the island begins to settle into a gentler rhythm, while all of what makes summer so appealing is still very much there. A short distance north of Porto-Vecchio, Pinarello, or Pinareddu in Corsican, sits around a sheltered bay framed by maritime pines. Its beach is known for fine sand and calm, shallow water, while the pine forest running alongside it provides natural shade.

The landscape is unmistakably Corsican, but it has none of the grand staging of some of the island's better-known beaches. The pleasure here is precisely its simplicity: swimming early in the morning, walking beneath the pines, or taking a kayak or paddleboard onto the bay. 
In early fall, places like this take on a different character. There is less reason to organise the day around securing a particular stretch of sand or arriving somewhere before the crowds. A morning swim can become lunch beside the sea; a short drive can turn into an afternoon discovering another cove.

MORE FREEDOM TO EXPLORE

With the strongest summer heat beginning to ease, September and October are ideal for discovering more than the beach. Quieter roads make it easier to explore the coastline, inland villages and mountain landscapes, while walking, kayaking and paddleboarding all become more enjoyable in the milder temperatures.
There is also less pressure to plan every detail in advance. In the height of summer, restaurants often need to be booked in advance; once the crowds begin to thin, there is far more freedom to simply stop somewhere that catches your eye. 
Farmers’ markets are calmer too, making it easier to browse stalls and discover the produce that defines the island: local wines, cured meats, Corsican cheeses, herbs from the maquis, fresh fish and seasonal fruit and vegetables. Together, they tell another side of Corsica’s story, one best discovered slowly.
