TRAVEL / ART / AIX-EN-PROVENCE

Paul Cézanne was born in Aix-en-Provence in 1839 and returned to its streets and surrounding landscapes throughout his life. More than a century later, his presence is still everywhere — from the cafés and addresses of the historic centre to the studio where he painted his final works and the silhouette of Sainte-Victoire beyond the city…

Aix-en-Provence:
Through the Eyes of Cézanne

Aix makes it unusually easy to follow an artist through the places that shaped his life. A walking route marked by small bronze “C” studs leads through the historic centre, connecting his birthplace, childhood homes, schools, cafés and other addresses associated with him.
The route also offers a different way to discover Aix itself, through its ochre façades, fountains, narrow streets and elegant squares rather than simply moving between monuments.
For the paintings, head to the Musée Granet, where two rooms are now permanently dedicated to Cézanne following the major 2025 exhibition Cézanne au Jas de Bouffan. The display follows his development from his earliest works in Aix to the landscapes and still lifes of his later years.

FROM HIS STUDIO TO SAINTE-VICTOIRE

Just outside the centre, the Atelier des Lauves brings the artist’s world into sharper focus. Cézanne worked here during the final years of his life, and the studio still contains his furniture, painting materials and objects that appeared in his late still lifes.

Further into the countryside, the landscapes themselves become part of the story. At the Bibémus quarries, ochre rock, pine trees and sharply defined forms reveal some of the scenery that influenced Cézanne’s increasingly geometric approach to painting.

And above it all is Mont Sainte-Victoire. Cézanne painted the mountain repeatedly, returning to the same subject from different viewpoints and in changing light. Once you have seen it from the roads and hills around Aix, it becomes easy to understand why this single landscape could occupy him for so long.

THE VERTU EXPERIENCE

A few minutes from the centre of Aix, Villa Gallici feels perfectly suited to this artistic side of the city. The 5-star Relais & Châteaux hotel occupies an 18th-century Provençal residence surrounded by a two-hectare garden of cypress trees, lavender and shaded terraces.

Its 23 individually decorated rooms and suites combine Provençal character with a distinctly Italian influence, while the heated outdoor pool, spa and La Taula Gallici restaurant make the property a destination in its own right.

The connection with Cézanne is particularly fitting: Villa Gallici can arrange visits to the painter’s studio, which lies around ten minutes away on foot.
